For 2010, the BMW 5 Series adds a new Gran Turismo model, which uses a 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, mated to an all-new eight-speed automatic transmission, and which will debut as a 550i designation. The largest model in the 5 Series lineup, it features a unique two-piece "bi-modal" trunk with a power-operated liftgate similar to the X models, and a small, separately-opening trunk lid under the rear window.
The 5 Series models (except M5 and Gran Turismo) must now be ordered with either an Executive Edition or M Sport Edition package, depending on the model, with a corresponding increase in price. The M5 is unchanged.

All use a six-speed manual transmission or optional six-speed automatic, except for the M5, which uses the six-speed manual or optional seven-speed sequential manual gearbox, and the Gran Turismo, which uses an eight-speed automatic transmission.
